Quick answer

The TCF Canada speaking test has three tasks in 12 minutes: a guided interview about yourself, a role-play where you ask questions, and an opinion on a topic. The TEF Canada has two sections in 15 minutes: a phone call to get information, then convincing a friend. The questions and topics below are our own practice prompts in those formats, not real exam items.

TCF task 1, entretien dirigé: introduce yourself

2 minutes, no preparation. The examiner, a stranger to you, asks you to introduce yourself and follows up on what you say. Have a natural two-minute introduction ready, but don’t recite it: answer the follow-up questions.

Polite formulas and natural fillers to gain time

Asking for repetition is normal and costs nothing. A natural filler is better than a long silence, but use one at a time, not a string of euh.

Polite formulas

FrenchEnglish
Excusez-moi de vous déranger.Sorry to bother you.
Pardon, je n’ai pas bien compris. Pourriez-vous répéter, s’il vous plaît ?Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Could you repeat, please?
Pourriez-vous parler un peu plus lentement ?Could you speak a little more slowly?
Qu’entendez-vous par … ?What do you mean by …?
C’est très gentil, merci. That’s very kind, thank you.

Fillers to gain time

FrenchEnglish
Alors… / Bon… / Eh bien…So… / Well…Pick one per answer.
C’est une bonne question.That’s a good question.
Voyons voir…Let me see…
Comment dire…How can I put it…
Disons que …Let’s say that …
Je n’y avais jamais vraiment réfléchi, mais …I’d never really thought about it, but …
Ce que je veux dire, c’est que …What I mean is …
Le mot m’échappe, mais c’est une sorte de …The word escapes me, but it’s a kind of …Describe the thing instead of stopping: examiners reward this.

Speaking test dos and don’ts

  • Answer the examiner’s follow-up questions in task 1 instead of reciting a memorised text.
  • Mix question forms in TCF task 2 and TEF section A: intonation, est-ce que, inversion, pourriez-vous, j’aimerais savoir si.
  • React to each answer with a follow-up or a check (si j’ai bien compris…).
  • Switch register as the role asks: vous with an employee or a landlord, tu with a friend in TEF section B.
  • Give a concrete example for every argument. The same connectors work in speaking and writing: see TCF and TEF writing phrases.
  • Build topic vocabulary (housing, work, health, transport) with the TCF and TEF vocabulary list, and practise with a timer so you know what 3 minutes 30, 5 minutes and 10 minutes feel like.
  • Don’t ask ten questions in the same form, or ten questions about price.
  • Don’t give up when the friend in TEF section B says no: that is part of the task.
  • Don’t stop in silence when a word is missing: describe it or rephrase.
  • Don’t switch to English, even for one word.
  • Don’t use tu with the examiner outside the TEF section B role-play.
  • Don’t trust anyone who sells "real exam questions": the prompts change and nobody can legitimately promise them.
