NCLC is the scale IRCC uses. Your TCF or TEF score converts to it, skill by skill.
What the test checks
Three of the four skills IRCC looks at, in about seven minutes. Questions adapt to you, so beginners and advanced speakers both get a useful result.
Listening
Four short recordings: a voicemail, a public announcement, a conversation at work, a radio segment. Each plays once, with one replay.
Reading
Four short texts in the TCF Canada style, from a poster to an opinion piece. The next question gets harder when you’re right.
Speaking
Read one sentence aloud, then answer a simple question. You get an estimated level and one tip to improve.
What level do you need?
Express Entry French bonus
NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills earns up to 50 extra CRS points and makes you eligible for French-language category draws.
Canadian citizenship
Adults aged 18 to 54 must show listening and speaking skills. With the TCF Canada or TEF Canada, IRCC asks for B1 or higher in both.
TCF Canada scores and NCLC levels
IRCC converts each TCF Canada skill score to an NCLC level with this table. Your level test result shows where you’d likely land.
