French is your biggest lever

Reaching NCLC 9 in all four French skills adds 74 points, 50 of them from the French bonus. Your score would be 498. It also qualifies you for French-language draws. The latest one, on Aug 19, 2026, invited candidates from 382 points.

What would raise it, biggest first

Each row changes one thing and re-scores your profile with the official CRS grid. Effort and time are our rough estimates, not IRCC figures.

  1. French NCLC 9 in all four skills

adds 74 points, new score 498

Higher French scores add more language points on top of the same French bonus. Includes the 50-point French bonus. Also qualifies you for French-language draws.

Effort: HighTime: 1 to 2+ years
    Plan my French study
  2. French NCLC 7 in all four skills

adds 62 points, new score 486

Pass TCF Canada or TEF Canada at NCLC 7 or higher in every skill. That earns the French bonus plus second-language points. Includes the 50-point French bonus. Also qualifies you for French-language draws.

Effort: HighTime: 6 to 12+ months
    Plan my French study
  3. One more year of work in Canada (1 in total)

adds 53 points, new score 477

Full-time (or equal part-time) work in TEER 0 to 3 jobs, with permission to work. Points rise with each full year, up to 5.

    Effort: MediumTime: 1 year
See your chances in recent draws
  4. Next education level: Two or more credentials, one of them 3+ years

adds 33 points, new score 457

Credentials from outside Canada need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to count.

Effort: HighTime: 1 to 2+ years
Check which draws you can enter

Also adds points, but not fully up to you

A nomination depends on a province choosing you, and a sibling either lives in Canada or doesn't.

  • A provincial nomination

adds 600 points, new score 1024

    Off the chart

Adds 600 points, which almost guarantees an invitation. It needs a separate application to a province, and some streams reward French.

    Effort: HighTime: Varies by province
See PNP streams that reward French
  • A brother or sister living in Canada

adds 15 points, new score 439

Counts only if they are 18 or older, a Canadian citizen or PR, and live in Canada.

Effort: LowTime: Only if it applies

Do your top two together

  • French NCLC 9 in all four skills
  • One more year of work in Canada (1 in total)

Together they would take you to 551, which is 127 points more than now.

Job offers no longer add CRS points. IRCC removed them on Mar 25, 2025 for everyone in the pool.

How it works

One change at a time, scored with the official grid

The tool uses the same CRS engine as our calculator. It never guesses points: each scenario is a full re-score of your profile.

  1. Your score now

We score your answers with IRCC's Comprehensive Ranking System grid, and pick whichever of English or French gives you more points as your first official language.

  2. Every realistic change

We then change one thing at a time (a French result, an English retake, another year of work, more study, your partner's test, a nomination) and score you again.

  3. Ranked by points

The changes are sorted by points added. Effort and time tags are our own rough estimates to help you plan, not official figures.

Why French

Why French often beats every other change

French adds points in up to three places at once. That is why it often tops the list for people who don't yet have Canadian experience.

The French bonus

NCLC 7 or higher in all four French skills adds 25 additional points, or 50 if your English is also CLB 5 or higher in all four.

Second-language points

French as your second official language adds up to 24 more points (22 with a partner).

French-language draws

With NCLC 7 in all four skills you can be invited in French-language draws. The latest cut-off was 382, against 518 in the latest Canadian Experience Class draw.

Worked example

Example: Priya, 30, with strong English

Priya is an illustration, not a real client. She is 30, single, has a bachelor's degree, CLB 9 in English, 3 years of work outside Canada and no French test yet. Her score today is 424.

Priya's top changes, scored with the CRS engine on this page
ChangePoints addedNew score
A provincial nomination+6001024
French NCLC 9 in all four skills+74498
French NCLC 7 in all four skills+62486
One more year of work in Canada (1 in total)+53477
Next education level: Two or more credentials, one of them 3+ years+33457

Leaving aside a nomination (which needs a province to pick her), French is Priya's best move: NCLC 7 alone takes her from 424 to 486, above the latest French-language cut-off of 382.

Good to know

Job offers no longer add CRS points

Since March 25, 2025, a job offer adds no CRS points for anyone in the Express Entry pool. IRCC said this was a temporary measure against fraud in job offers. A job offer can still help you qualify for some programs and provincial streams.

In 2026 IRCC consulted on reforming the CRS, including new points for high-wage jobs. Those are proposals only and not in force. This tool always follows the grid that applies today.

Every point value comes from IRCC's CRS criteria and the Ministerial Instructions. Cut-offs come from IRCC's official rounds data.
