How the section works

What to expect on test day

The reading section has 39 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, each with four possible answers. Questions get harder as you go: early texts are signs, ads and short messages; later ones are press articles, essays and opinion pieces at C1 and C2.

Time is the real challenge. The first questions go quickly, so bank that time for the long texts at the end.

Text types

What you’ll read

  • A1–A2

    Notices, ads, messages

Find one precise detail: a date, a price, a condition. Read the question first, then scan.

  • B1

    Emails and community notices

Workplace rules, volunteer calls. Watch conditions like à condition de and sauf.

  • B2

    Press articles

Identify the author’s view. Structures like si… aussi show a balanced position.

  • C1–C2

    Essays and opinion pieces

Dense, abstract writing. Spot who thinks what, and how ideas are qualified or refuted.

Strategy

Read smarter, not slower

  1. Question first, text second

Know what you’re looking for before you start reading.

  2. Spend under a minute on A1–B1

Save 2–3 minutes per question for the C1–C2 texts.

  3. Rephrased beats repeated

The right answer usually paraphrases the text. Copied words are often a trap.

  4. Read the whole sentence

A ne… que or pourtant at the end can flip the meaning.
