French speaking practice cards for TCF and TEF Canada

Cartes d’expression orale

Choose your exam and task, then prepare and speak with the official times. Record yourself if you like, listen back and check your answer against the points on the card.

Exam
Task

The examiner asks about you: who you are, your work, your plans. 2:00 to speak, as in the exam.

How to play

  1. 1Choose your exam and task.
  2. 2Prepare and speak with the official times; record yourself if you like.
  3. 3Listen back and check yourself against the list.

What it trains

Speaking to the clock in the real task formats: TCF Canada’s Entretien dirigé, Exercice en interaction and Expression d’un point de vue, and TEF Canada’s Obtenir des renseignements and Argumenter pour convaincre.

Why it matters for TCF and TEF Canada

The speaking test is short: 12 minutes for TCF Canada and 15 for TEF Canada. Practising with the real timings shows you how much you can say in the time, so you neither run dry nor get cut off.

Rules and tips to remember

  • Plan in three parts

An opening sentence, two or three points with an example each, and a short conclusion. It works for every task.

  • Record yourself

Listening back shows the hesitations and repeated words you don’t notice while you speak.

  • Vary your questions

When a task asks you to get information, mix your question forms: Est-ce que…?, Pourriez-vous me dire…?, À quelle heure…?

  • Structure your opinion

À mon avis, d’une part… d’autre part, c’est pourquoi: connectors make an argument easy to follow.
