What it trains

38 high-frequency verbs (être, avoir, aller, faire, pouvoir, devoir…) in six tenses: présent, passé composé, imparfait, futur simple, conditionnel and subjonctif.

Why it matters for TCF and TEF Canada

Telling a story, describing, making plans and giving an opinion each need different tenses: passé composé and imparfait for a story, the conditional for polite requests and hypotheses, the subjunctive after il faut que. Verb forms are one of the first things a reader notices in your writing.

Rules and tips to remember

  • Passé composé or imparfait?

The passé composé moves the story forward (il est arrivé); the imparfait sets the scene (il pleuvait).

  • être verbs agree

With être, the past participle agrees with the subject: elle est allée, ils sont partis.

  • Future and conditional share a stem

j’irai / j’irais, je ferai / je ferais: same stem, different ending. Learn an irregular stem once and you have both tenses.

  • Subjunctive after necessity, wishes and doubt

il faut que je fasse, je veux que tu viennes, je doute qu’il puisse.
